The life has its own twists and turns. In journalism, one slip can mean the difference between having a great byline and being the subject of the byline. In TV everyday is a new experience. But the one that haunts me most is an incident that happened several years ago in Sierra Leone in West Africa. I was covering the armed revolution by Fodah Sankoh’s army.

We were supposed to travel from Freetown to Lungi by road. We were on our way when we met some foreign journalists who had been in the country for some time. They suggested that we should form a convoy and that their car should travel in front since they knew the terrain better. Being a keen young reporter, I was suspicious. I feared that maybe they will get some visuals that we will end up missing if we are behind them. But since they insisted, I had no choice. Our cars had travelled just a few kilometers when suddenly there was an explosion. The revolutionary army had laid an IED and both the journalists died on the spot. In that days that followed, the entire world press descended in Free Town. It was only then that I discovered that we had lost two of the world’s best known war journalists. I often think to myself, it could have been me in that car.

The media scene in India has undergone a sea change. It is a truly young medium. The sort of opportunities youngsters are afforded in this country of the world. Most of the  reporters, anchors and producers you see on TV are relatively young in comparison to those in other developed news markets like the United States and United Kingdom.

A young media helps young India find its voice. Some of the qualities associated with young Indians are fearless, inquisitive, bold, aggressive, ambition driven and unafraid to question authority. This is a generation that not only wants to compete with rest of the world, but also beat them. I truly believe that talent is the most important thing that drives success and a lot of companies are recognizing this fact and giving more and younger people a chance to assume positions of responsibility.

In most of these causes the chosen youngsters have lived up to expectations. That said, it would not be fair to say that experience has no place in life. Experience gives a person certain confidence in decision making that no amount of talent can provide. Those who are experienced should groom those who are talented and young by giving them tough challenges and then guide them to success. Simply throwing someone, no matter how talented into the deep end is a recipe for disaster.

I would like to report live from Lahore on the day India and Pakistan sign a lasting treaty of friendship. One that would end our bitter acrimony and usher a new era of peace and prosperity for people of both countries.
